The Bureau of the Treasury awarded the full Php 15 billion in 5-year bonds it planned to reissue today (FXTN 5-74) at an average rate of 4.03%, 3 basis points higher than the 4.0% coupon it fetched last January 26. Bid-to-cover ratio was 2.6 as almost Php 39 billion worth of bids was submitted.

Yields moved sideways in the morning as market players waited for the bond auction at noon. Two-way interest was seen with some big-lot trades getting recorded.  Most players expected successful auction given the short tenor and its performance when it was first issued. Despite the high level of interest in terms of volume submitted, banks asked for slightly higher rates than expected. Thus, yield adjusted higher in the afternoon. Done trades across the curve went up by 2.5 to 11.5 basis points, but not much volume added in the second session. After Php 8.55 billion getting dealt in the AM, the day closed with Php 12.0 billion worth of trades.

With another bond auction out of the way, local bond market players are likely to wait for fresh leads.
