Dollar-Peso Exchange Rate

US equities down about 1% overnight, and the USD traded lower against major currencies amid mounting doubts over US President Donald Trump’s policies. Emerging market equity markets also fell today, with the Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) dropping approximately 0.93%. Despite trading weaker against major currencies, market saw the greenback trade higher against emerging market currencies, with the local pair closing 13.5 centavos higher to Php50.320. USD/PHP was further supported by heavy fixing demand and buying momentum was seen from the start of the session. USD/PHP broke through the recent technical resistance of Php50.225 and finally closed at Php50.320.

Local Government Securities Market

Local bond yields continued to rise in today's trading as the market continued erasing the post-FOMC statement rally. Jumbo bonds saw its yields gain another 2 - 9 basis points after the decline of as much as 25 basis points seen last week. FXTN 10-60 remained the most actively-traded bond after capturing more than 40% of the market's total volume. Yield on this bond rose 2.5 basis points from 4.495% to 4.52%. Meanwhile, recently auctioned 4.8-year bond FXTN 5-74 also saw its yield rise to as high as 4.22% after seeing an auction rate of 4.132%, up by close to 9 basis points.   Volume of trades today was steady at Php10.5 Bn.

Monetary Board is scheduled to meet tomorrow and is expected to just keep key rates unchanged. Players may instead look out for hints of a possible rate hike in the next months and in any changes in the BSP's inflation outlook.
