USD/PHP continued its recovery today, closing at Php50.665, up 29.5 centavos from the previous close. USD recovery was spurred by growing optimism that US Senate Republicans would be able to pass the tax overhaul bill. They had garnered enough votes needed to push through with a tax reform. This prompted the greenback to trade higher across the board. USD/PHP effectively gapped up to Php50.400 at the open and buying interest was immediately seen. Overall USD strength in combination with suspected fixing demand, saw the local pair break through the 200 DMA (daily moving average) technical resistance of Php50.488 quite easily. USD/PHP reached an intraday high of Php50.670 before eventually closing at Php50.665. Looking ahead, key data for the week are Philippine CPI data (3.3% expected) scheduled tomorrow and US NFP (Non-farm Payroll) data scheduled this Friday and 200k market expectation.
