Learning through Play - UnionBank donates a Toy Library to the Guinsay Elementary School

“I really like the slide. I learned to wait for my turn to play in the slide.”- Princess Ashley Gader

Ashley is among the 161 kinder pupils who now enjoy the toy library in Guinsay Elementary School, Danao City, Cebu. This project was a result of the collaboration among the Department of Education (DepEd), the Philippine Toy Library (PTL) and UnionBank of the Philippines (UnionBank).

Last February 27, Center for Strategic Partnerships head Genaro V. Lapez and AVP for Corporate Social Responsibility Paula S. Joson together with PTL President Edsel Ramirez turned over the toy library to the Guinsay Elementary School community headed by Principal Ms. Dina Dagatan.

A workshop was facilitated for teachers and parents to ensure proper management and sustainability of the toy library. Arts and craft activities and storytelling were also performed for the kinder pupils.

“We really believe in this project. Many studies have shown that play has been found to help children understand the world around them and aid in their development of not just motor and coordination skills but also problem solving and social skills,” said CSR AVP Paula S. Joson.

The project is part of UnionBank’s employee-driven CSR program—GoBeyond Communities (Go Beyond)—that addresses the bank’s main advocacies of education, inclusion, and enterprise development. In the arena of education, employees have been focusing on the rehabilitation of school facilities and donation of equipment.

For Guinsay Elementary School’s toy library, the GoBeyond Cebu Cluster not only assisted in the electrical and painting work but added to the library’s collection of toys as well. It was also through their efforts that a kiddie slide, a PTL special request, was made part of the library. They were also the ones who set up the toy library in preparation for the turn over.

The school officials, with support from their PTA, worked together to complete the construction of the toy library.

“The parents are thankful to all donors and sponsors who made this project possible. Their children can experience more imaginative and creative activities. They have nothing to worry about because the play area is safe and conducive for recreational play,” said Teacher Ratchie Marie Meca.
