Going Beyond

Balik Eskwela Program for 75 Elementary and High School Students at Davao City

By Marcelino Samson Jr. – BOO-BOP Mindanao Region

“The children are our Tomorrow’s Leaders.”

Our GoBeyond Communities (GBC) volunteers collectively believe this very famous tagline, which brought the tem together last May 28, 2016 for happy times with 75 schoolchildren of Davao City. In the hearts of the UnionBankers, they understand the importance of caring for these children who are vulnerable and dependent as many of them come from depressed areas of the city. Sharing their time and effort beyond the confines of the Bank helped provide encouragement and support to these children.

Even before the event day, the volunteers actively prepared for their time with the little angels. The Davao Monteverde Branch displayed an exemplary example of UBUNTU spirit. The employees thought of creative games and bought gifts for the children such as U-Supplies and Backpacks. The Davao Magsaysay Branch employees meanwhile, pooled efforts to pack the U-Supplies. Commitment and passion were seen overflowing among the UnionBankers who participated for this memorable event.

The volunteers arrived early at the site of the event at Barangay 11-B Hall, Panganiban Street, Davao City. The children came in batches. Barangay Captain Marnita Fe Arabiana and Kagawads Ibay and Pabara were there to assist us with the venue. When everyone was settled in, Reiza Marie Laud, daughter of Branch Manager Teresa Laud, started the program. Both Kapitan Arabiana and GBC Cluster Champion MB Samson shared their inspirational messages. Then, it was all fun and excitement for everyone.

Roldan Baliano handled three fun-filled games that brought much excitement and thrill for the children. After the group games, we proceeded with the orderly distribution of U-School Supplies and BackPacks. The program wrapped up with messages of encouragement from the volunteers, and serving delicious packed meal for all the children.

The local leaders were very grateful of the endeavor because for their community, UnionBank was the first bank who reached out to them and conducted the community service.

After the event, the volunteers regrouped at Davao’s own Penong Restaurant. Project Leader Teresa C. Laud, who had similar experience in organizing community reach outs, received a Certificate of Appreciation for a very good job in organizing this first GBC Project for the year in Davao City. The Davao Monteverde Branch was also awarded for its exemplary UBUNTU Spirit to leave a lasting impact to the communities of Araullo-Panganiban-Avancena Area, Davao City.

This outreach program is a testament of our employees’ passion and promise to do more, do better and do greater in serving its communities.
