Sustainability

At UnionBank, we believe that to be a bank of enduring greatness, we have to look beyond profit. Our latest Sustainability Report is aptly entitled Driven by a Higher Purpose because only by looking beyond profit can we truly Make Da Diff, and help make lives better.

We do this by putting our customer first, constantly reinventing ourselves to provide the best products and services. We innovate - both internally and externally - working with the Bank's partners, supporting our communities, and protecting the environment. This way we remain resilient in changing times. As a bank of choice, we do not walk ahead but stand side-by-side with all our stakeholders.

Also, with the Bank's refreshed sustainability framework that builds on the UnionBank DNA - Purpose, Values, Vision, and Brand, we ensure that the Bank is on track in achieving its sustainability agenda.

GoBeyond Communities

Since 2014, UnionBank has been empowering its employees to “Make Da Diff” through projects that are geared to specifically help deserving communities in the areas that they serve through the GoBeyond Communities (GoBeyond) program.

Here, employees are the ones who conceptualize and eventually implement community-enriching projects that benefit not only people but also the planet. This program is nationwide in scope, and as such, clusters were formed according to geographical locations to ensure that wherever there is a UnionBank branch, the community it belongs to experiences the Bank’s purpose of elevating lives and fulfilling dreams.

To date, 1,719 volunteers have clocked in a total of 10,459 volunteer hours. Their projects have allowed them to reach over 234 communities or 1,400,000 beneficiaries with donations amounting to over P5 million.

This drive to serve communities has been recognized by international community. The program won a Gold Award for Corporate Social Responsibility Program in the 2015 Asian Banking and Finance Retail Banking Awards.

Engaging with the Academe

UnionBank desires to connect and co-create with the community. Grounded on its purpose of “Making Da Diff” by enabling communities and committed to brand values of: MAGIS, which means, to Do More, Do Better, Do Greater, and UBUNTU, which means to engage community, because a person becomes human only when he belongs, the Bank forges long-term and sustainable partnerships with the academic communities.

Lumina Pandit II: Unending Light – University of Santo Tomas

Inspired by the University of Santo Tomas’ exhibit of rare books called LUMINA PANDIT or Spreading the Light during its 400th founding anniversary, UnionBank Chairman and CEO Justo A. Ortiz committed to support the UST Miguel de Benavides Library and University Archives.

With the Bank's support, the UST library purchased modern equipment that accelerated the restoration and conservation process of old books and documents, exhibited in LUMINA PANDIT II: A CONTINUUM.

Beyond restoration and preservation, selected materials are now "digitized" thru scanning, and uploaded onto the internet to better share its wealth with people around the world.

The Bank’s partnership with UST continued with SEMPER LUMINA or Always, the Light. Launched in this milestone event are the multi-volume catalogues of the heritage library and university archives, and the online digital library. Truly, this partnership has endeavoured to spread the light of knowledge and truth to a global audience.

ARETE – Ateneo de Manila University

Arete is created as a central space for stimulating creative, adaptive and multi-dimensional thinking, thus generating new ideas, products and services that will drive a global economy.

UnionBank takes part in this path-breaking endeavour by sponsoring the main plaza to be known as UnionBank Plaza - a structural and symbolic link between the art and innovation wings.  This signifies the interplay of the disciplines and their mutual enrichment.

Beyond the building, UnionBank aims to connect with the best and brightest students from different fields of study and tap their passion and potentials.

Center for Financial and Monetary Economics -  University of the Philippines School of Economics

The UnionBank Center for Financial and Monetary Economics was built to facilitate sophisticated econometrics and financial modelling.

UnionBank’s sponsorship of the new center of learning extends to providing scholarships for masters and doctoral students of economics.

Also included in this partnership is the construction of Student Activity Center housing different student organizations of UPSE, and fostering camaraderie among students. With these centers for learning, UnionBank commits to developing a healthier financial future and to training competitive young economists.

Ureka

The Ureka Forum is UnionBank’s way of affirming its commitment to empower the Filipino to succeed. We understand that there is a growing need for business innovation, as statistically recorded, 95% of the Philippine businesses are SMEs and only 1% of that, have working websites; this, despite the fact that nearly 70% of Filipinos today are online everday. This reality presents a “disconnect” with the current market, when majority of the customers can be found online.

Discovering this disconnect was the "Eureka" moment for UnionBank and our consortium partners, and thus, Ureka Forum was born.

At the Ureka Forum, we bring together a community of experts and organizations that rally behind every Filipino’s capability to multiply entrepreneurial growth ten-fold. We intend to conduct a Ureka Forum Road Show in various key cities and provinces nationwide, the local government partners will also become honorary stakeholders. Other members of the consortium include: the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Shopinas.com, Air21, PanahonTV, Accent Micro Technologies, Inc. (AMTI), PLDT Smart SME Nation, GeiserMaclang Marketing and Communications Inc, and DragonPay.

We commit to elevate business confidence amongst the consortium, through inclusive innovation, relationship-building, and mutual beneficial advocacies.Since Unionbank is spearheading this initiative, we will fulfill the role as the enabler of innovations by providing the payment gateway for the e-Commerce businesses via the EON Visa Debit Card.

Through the insights shared by our consortium partners and industry experts participating in the conference, the Ureka Forum intends to harness the inherent capability of local entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and harness their strategic and critical thinking skills to create a bigger impact on the lives of more Filipinos.
