Primer

WHAT ARE BONDS?

Bonds are certificates of indebtedness of an issuer (e.g. the Philippine Government, corporations, other sovereigns). The bond represents the issuer’s direct and unconditional promise to pay the amount it borrowed at a specified future date. Government-issued bonds have the biggest issuance volume because the government’s needs to fund the economy is much bigger than that of non-governments

FAQs

Can bonds be pre-terminated?

Unlike a time deposit, a bond cannot be pre-terminated – it can only be sold in the secondary market at the prevailing market price.

What are the fees involved in investing in bonds?

Custodianship fees only.

What is the minimum amount of a client bond investment?

PHP 1,000,000 and USD 100,000 are the recommended minimum face value for Peso and USD bond investments, respectively. Larger volumes are encouraged as it is easier to sell these in the secondary market compared to smaller volumes.

How can I compute for my expected coupon payments on coupon payment day?

Peso =  (Face Value * Coupon Rate * 80% / Number of Coupon Payments per year) – Custodianship Fee
Dollar = (Face Value * Coupon Rate / Number of Coupon Payments per year) – Custodianship Fee
